Vanity House Theatre began as Vanity Productions, a nickname given to a handful of talented graduate theatre students at the University of Missouri at Columbia. It was brought to the East Coast by William and Deborah Braak, who came to Philadelphia with the intention of making Vanity Productions into a legitimate theater. Their plans remained nascent for many years, however, as the necessities of life and family prevented their theatre’s birth.

In 2006, Vanity Productions was reborn as Vanity House Theatre in order to support graduate work at Villanova University, where it established its first-ever summer workshop, and then re-imagined itself as a resident theatre company operating out of Manayunk that could nurture new artists and art in Philadelphia.

Vanity House Theatre is gearing up for its first full season to be performed in available public spaces in and around Manayunk. While the theatre does not, at the moment, have a permanent performance space, preferring instead to take advantage of the versatility of found and public spaces, Vanity House has recently purchased an actual house for its headquarters. With this, we hope to begin building the resident company that will form the core of the theatre, as well as building what we hope one day to be a vibrant, thriving arts collective in the Philadelphia area
